Japanese Field Clothing

I’m working from a Folkwear Pattern for a Hapi Type Jacket. I cannot get the collar to lay flat. I know most Japanese clothing was made by hand. The pattern does not have the collar lay on the bias. I have shown this to 3 seamstresses and they are confused also. Any advice???

The band does not lie flat in this type of garment. If you lay the jacket flat the band will sort of form a point at the center back. When you wear the jacket the band stands up in the back and hugs the sides of your neck. These bands are never cut on the bias.
