   Martha, the best thing about socks is that they're not very big. So they work up quickly. Unless they'll be worn more like slippers, I suggest knitting socks on small needles and fine yarn. This kind of knitting actually goes very quickly, because the needles are so easy to handle (or at least, that's what i find). I used to knit tiny animals for my kids on size 00 or some such silly size, and it was great fun; they were like long sewing needles.

   I can't suggest a pattern off the top of my head, but i'll think about it. I'm sure an early issue of Threads had great sock knitting info. Try issue no. 2, pp. 28-32 (wow, this is an old one. i think customer service will send you a photocopy if the issue is out of print; try them at 800-888-8286). Here are some more: no. 27, pp.70-71; no. 31, pp. 43-45,46;

   I have found the easiest basic sock pattern is in the "Learn How" books - that are often found in local drug stores that also carry some yarns.

   Here is another site  http://www.wiseneedle.com/knitpattree.asp.  This one is thanks to Jean.  If you check discussions 1984 and 2009, you will find many other references and suggestions for socks.  I used a set of directions that had a toe-up method and the heel was worked exactly like the toe.                rjf
