   Yup, that works.  A  fun application for that is to then weave a few yarns through the dropped stitches. If your piece  is originally knit in stripes, it makes a cool plaid effect.

   The weaving thing is an interesting idea, especially if you're trying to get rid of 40 years of yarn leftovers.  But how do you bind off after you've dropped the right stitches?  Just one stitch after the other with no space for the dropped stitches?   A BIG loop over the dropped ones so there is a space?  I suppose it depends on what you want to do with it after.    rjf

   I think  you'd  have to go with the big loop, or several smaller ones to equal out the space.

   Barbara Goodman's book - I think the second Treasury, has instructions on how to do this. 

   Her four books give hundreds of knitting patterns - lace, mosaic, cables, etc.
