Using knits
Hi Denise,
I couldn't find a pattern mentioned on page 63 of the latest issue (#151). If you're talking about the dress on page 62 (Butterick 5049), yes, that pattern is designed for light weight knits, but also for lightweight wovens. All knits stretch, but as the article describes knits stretch in different amounts. It's always wise to read the specifications on the back of the pattern and the fabric recommendations. In most cases the pattern will indicate the type of stretch that will be suitable for the pattern.Sometimes the pattern is very specific, but sometimes you have to do a little detective work. Most websites show the back of the pattern envelope if you happen to do your shopping online, and you can learn a lot about how the pattern will work given various weights of fabric. This pattern (Butterick 5049) calls for "Soft Light to Mediumweight Fabrics: Rayon, Knits, Cotton or Linen." The fact that the dress can be made with woven fabrics as well as knits is an indication that it's best for stable/firm knits that don't have a lot of stretch. Look at the chart on page 63 to determine whether or not the knit fabric that you are considering falls into this category.
Good luck.
