I am trying to cover buttons with lambskin leather for a winter coat I am making.
The kit from the fabric store seems a bit awkward to use. It is really hard to squeeze the leather covered button into the button holder, and even harder to push the back of the button on.
Does anyone have any tips on how to do this without wrecking the molds with a heavy hammer; which is what I am tempted to do?

I lay the circle of fabric on top of the mold, the place the cover on top of the fabric and push them into the mold. Then fold the excess fabric onto the teeth of the cover (or into the cover if there is no teeth--I prefer the ones with the teeth); place the back on the mold and push down with a spool of thread. Guttermann thread works great because the are narrow in diameter. I haven't used leather but I have done two layers of fabric--lining and fashion fabric or fashion fabric and tulle. I don't think that I've ever made them with heavier fabric than cotton or poly satin.

Thanks very much sewchris! This tip helped. I tried the Guterman spools, then found that an old wooden small spool fit prfeectly over the top of the device to protect the back of the button. The wood allowed me to use my hammer to get the back to seat properly!
