Lifelike Flexible Mannequins Wanted

sheri_post | Posted in The Archives on

OK Gang!
I am opening a retail store for my
designs. But, no ordinary mannequin will
do for me. I want to dress them in wedding gowns, and have a male in a suit carrying them down a ladder over their shoulder as in “elope”…
I have many more risque scenarios that
I need to produce…but the mannequins are thousands of dollars. I can make anything myself, so who has some ideas to help me on this one? Stuffed stocking material? armature of really flexible wires? All ideas and suggestions will be
considered and NOT laughed at.
Regards

    Hi Sheri,

Remember a lonnng time ago Threads had a back cover
entitled (rather goofishly) She Knows Her Nylons. The feature was about a woman who made a display for one of the upscale Manhattan department store windows. She had created three or four Las Vegas showgirls in elaborate costumes. The "body" of each girl was created from stuffing and several layers of flesh toned pantyhose. I believe the facial features were stitched for definition and then painted.

Perhaps a similar design, more life sized (I think these figures were about 4') and not quite as elaborate facially...? You could build an armature from coat hangers that would allow a modicum of flexibility. There may also be a more flexible wire that could be used.

Another idea would be to get a few volunteers and do plaster casts of their faces and hands (they even sell kits for doing this in art supply catalogs) and attach to a good looking, human form, artsy kind of frame (anodized aluminum, pipes and fittings, rubber hoses, plywood cutouts or ???). If you did the faces and hands really well with expressions of suprise, etc. you could get away with just a few body parts (if you're thinking really out there you could also add an odd elbow, foot, or even a cast of someone's cleavage).
