Lately, while shopping in the mall I have seen a number of cute tops made out of a charmeuse weight, silk and spandex blend. I would love to be able to make my own tops like this. Does anyone know of any sources where I can find this?
The only silk fabric I can find in town is dupioni and this won’t work for the blouses that I want.

try Thai silks
http://www.thaisilks.com/
I looked there but they only have two options: white or black. I really want some beautiful jewel tones to show off the loveliness of the silk.
Try http://www.banksvilledesignerfabrics.com. Bought some gorgeous stretch silk charmeuse from them. Also try Metro Textiles in NYC, I don't have the number off hand, but they've been reviewed on Pattern review so the number is ther. Ask for Kashi and he'll send you samples if he has any.
That sounds so luscious, my mouth is watering! I'm going to check out that site.
whooops! I got so excited I sent that twice!
That fabric sounds luscious! I'm going to check out that site.
It is luscious and the price was right. I lined a stretch wool jacket and made a matching tank top with it. There is nothing like a silk lining.
I don't know where you are located. Here in Toronto, I bought stretch silk charmeuse in a bright turquoise to line a wool jacket at Chu Shing on Queen St, but I don't think they have a web-site. I will check this out for you and let you know.
The colours they had were amazing, not just the darker jewel tones that go so well with the fall fashions. This store is fab for any chinese silks, brocades and chiffons.
How far west of Spadina is Chu Shing. I think I'd like to check it out.Thanks.
Hi, it's west of Spadina in the block that ends at Augusta. It's beside or almost beside The Wool House on the north side.
Have fun,
Elaine
Great! thanks. I'm looking forward to checking it out.
If you can find it in white, silk is very easy to dye into briilliant colors.
Are you using silk dyes or regular old Rit?
Either dye will work. If I were doing volume silk dying I would opt for the silk dyes. All of you who are reading this thread would benefit from having a copy of the Dharma Trading Co catalog. It has a wealth of information, fabric, dyes, clothing blanks, tools. And its fun to read. http://www.dharmatrading.com
Silk dyes beautifully but spandex doesn't I would definitely do a test first. My guess is it would be streaky.
We dyed about 25 yds of stretch silk charmeuse and it took the dye very evenly.
That's wonderful, good to know. Stretch silk charmeuse sounds wonderful, what did you make? Does the addition of the stretch fibres stop or reduce the fraying significantly?
We made dance costumes - pants and tunics. I don't know about the fraying because we serge the edges of everything to eliminate that.
