Looking for 1940’s Bridal Satin Fabri…

Not an avid seamstress, but looking to replicate a 1940’s bias cut gown. Any advice on a modern fabric to choose? Think slipper satin or silk charmeuse will look closer? Think I should choose silk or manmade? I’m leaning towards silk just because the manmade isn’t anywhere near the weight and quality that is once was. Shame Skinner still isn’t around!

Email me at [email protected] if you have any suggestions!

Thanks!

I would call the nice folks at B& J fabrics in New York, 212-354-8150. They have a terrific selection of silks. They are good folks to deal with.

You may also want to get swatches from Thai Silks 1-800-silk
or from Supersilks in Flushing NY,1-800-432-silk, their selection is smaller than thaisilks .

All of these are good companies who can do both large and small orders. At thai silks & at B&J you could have a conversation on the phone with them about what you are looking for. The folks at Supersilk have pretty poor English skills so they can't help out that way.

    Good Luck!!

*I would think that a crepe back satin would give the look you want. They're available in rayon, poly and silk. Silk is a lot more expensive but the drape in fantastic. Rayon also has really nice weight. About the only advantage I can think of for the poly is they are often available in 60" width, good for full length bias. But if you're doing a 40's style dress, go for the narrower. When the original was done these fabrics weren't available in 60" - skirts were pieced.
