Looking for Travel Advice

loeloe | Posted in General Discussion on

I will be abroad later this summer and was wondering what wonderful sewing and fabric related things there are to see and shop in either Amsterdam or Paris.

There is a wonderful street market in Amsterdam that is several blocks long and includes lots of fabrics.  I'm sorry I don't have the name handy (I am in Sweden at the moment) but it is listed in every tourist guide about Amsterdam.

    Paris fabric store

I love to fabric shop when I travel!  My favorite shop in Paris, where I've gone for years, is JANSSENS, 3-5 Rud D'Anjou, just off Faubourg St. Honore just east of the Palais de l'Elysee and opposite the American Embassy.  PH:  1.42.65.04.00.  It's expensive and I save my shopping $ for this shop.  Regular goods are on ground floor; breathtaking evening fabrics downstairs.  Their English may be sketchy, but if you are polite and bid them a cheerful Bonjour!  when you enter, they will be lovely.  Unlike many high-end fabrics shops, you can touch the fabric.  There's a small sofa in the front window where my husband waits while I shop. Many seamstresses shop here with their clients or for their clients.  The sales staff has impeccable taste, and I generally leave with just one piece of special fabric.  It's the first place I visit when I'm there, and often I'll make several trips to pre-shop before making a decision. I was just there in May and the experience was as special as always. They take credit cards.  Good luck!

    Fabric shopping in Paris

There are fantastic places for fabric in Paris.  The biggest area is in the 18th arronisement near Sacre Coeur.  Take the Metro to the Anvers stop and then walk up the hill toward the church.  You will begin to see some fabric shops on that road.  There are many many others on the surrounding streets like Rue d'Orsel and Rue Livingstone.  One of the biggest is called "Tissus Reine"  and it's on Place St. Pierre.

    Enjoy!
