Machine Applique on Boiled Wool

Mike_Milbrath | Posted in The Archives on

My daughter was given a wonderful boiled
wool jacket from France, with whimsical
machine embroidery and applique. All of
the applique is in knits. Has anyone
tried this before? Could I use cottons
instead of knits? Or some other fabric?
And what kind of machine foot do I need?
(Viking) I would appreciate any tips,
ideas, and suggestions.

I think you should use a Knit Fabric
    Cotton will shrink when cleand.
Try a thin underlay or a soft Iron on.

*Mike I've appliqued with boiled wool on to cotton material and it has worked fine. I've done it with a regular presserfoot but you can also use a special applique foot or embroidery foot if you want. I use it as scraps on my son's pants and they feel real nice to me. I use a Wonder Under or Heat n Bond (this will also stablize the knit fabric some) to attach them to the pants then zig zag around them with a colorful (or matching) thread. You can also use fancy stitches if you want. My machine has a few hundred stitches but I still like the zig zag satin for patches. Cotton would be ok if you prewash it so it won't shrink on you. Actually I like to make pictures so I use a variety of fabrics starting with the largest base on the bottom and only stitching around each one as I go avoiding the sides until I attach the patch/applique.
