machine for young sewer

jsinger | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

Hello, all.  I could use some advice.  I spent several hours each week last summer teaching my (then) six year old great niece how to sew.  We made pillows,a skirt and a vest.  I was thrilled because, after five nieces and two great nieces who weren’t interested, someone wanted to sew!  She started out on my 31 year old Viking 6460–saved just in  case a budding sewer/sewist/thread artist should appear.  She  moved on to my Viking #1 and handled it quite well.  Serious family illness kept us from sewing together this summer–until yesterday when she tried out my new (to me) Designer SE.  I think I’ve got her hooked.  Anyway, she wants a sewing machine for Hanukah.  Any suggestions as to what might be a good machine for her?  I’d  like something she can handle now and grow into later.    Joyce in Pittsburgh

Well, I have 2 Desiger SEs but I have had Janomes in the past.  When DGD (16 at the time) got interested in sewing, I bought her a Janome Sew Precise for her birthday in Nov.........and followed with a serger for Christmas.  This is a gal with talent and a desire so I fanned the flames! ha ha

The Sew Precise is an electronic model, not too expensive and has the needle threader, the one-step buttonhole gizmo (they work great!) and it has lots of stitches.  I don't know how much you great niece is going to do.......embroidery?  She's young yet so the $300 machine would be something that would last her for quite a few years.  I don't know how much you're looking at spending..........and my DGD loves her machine..........I just figured she can pop for her own TOL model when she's through college.........she's just starting now!

Hope this helps........sorry it got so wordy.

Thanks for the info.  I'll look into the Janome.     Joyce
