machine good for leather

beldancer | Posted in General Discussion on

I am looking into buying a new sewing machine, with all the usual stiches and features, but i need one that can sew on leather. Not super thick leather, but what is the thickness of a leather vest. Brand is not a big issue with me,i would like to not go over 1000.00 dollars if possible. I would like it to have an automatic buttonholer though. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

If your going to do a lot of sewing with leather, I'd recommend an industrial mechanical machine.  I tried sewing leather on a digital home sewing machine (a very expensive one) and it just couldn't keep up especially over the bulky seams.  I ended up buying a Juki tl98E, which is a light industrial machine and have been extremely happy with it.  Check out allbrands.com - they carry a lot of industrial machines.

    Good luck !

I also work on Juki's full time, and have had NO problems with leather.  I cannot give advice on home machines for leather, as I've never tried using one on leather.
