To start I would like to introduce myself. Hi I’m Roger. Now my problem is I have been trying to make my own kilt. I have searched for weeks on the ‘net. I can’t find anything that is useful. I need something as simple and detail oriented as possible. Because I cannot see spending in excess of $300 for one. Not to mention the pride of self craftsmanship. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Way back there were instructions in Threads (i.e. early 1990s) and I'm sure someone out there will have the instructions. It will still be pricey -- a traditional men's kilt takes an enormous amount of yardage.
Yes about twelve yards for a "great kilt". I have been calling several used book stores, and such to try and find that particular issue since it is out of print. It is'nt really the price. I am one of those people that want to make everything on my own. I Like when people ask "where did you get that" and see their jaw drop when I say " I made it myself" One of my main goals in life is to be as self sufficient as possible.
I remember that article also, but not exactly which issue. I think I remember that the pleats were formed so when it was finished, it looked like the original yardage. That would mean that each pleat would take up one repeat of plaid and the next pleat would start an inch, probably less, away. So if there were seven repeats of plaid in the fabric, you would get less than seven inches of kilt. But those deep pleats sure look great swinging behind a bagpipe! rjf
And a man's kilt is easier than a woman's because you don't need to worry as much about darts for hip shaping.
It was Feb. March 1991 #33 Pg 54. I have found a pattern but made very little sense. I may be able to decipher it with a good bit more research. If anyone would be interested in seeing for themselves http://users.tinyonline.co.uk/chegc/kiltsite/page3.htm
Instructions as well http://users.tinyonline.co.uk/chegc/kiltsite/page2.htm
Thanks for advice. I get the feeling I have just begun my "'venture"
Do a google search and type in "making a kilt" (including the quotation marks)...I found a ton of stuff that way!
There are also books on kilt making, I remember my mom having one, but I have no clue where she got it.

Thanks I,ll try that!
Roger, the pattern company "Folkwear" has a kilt pattern. It is listed as pattern # ptF152 at this website:
http://www.earthguild.com/products/folkwear/folkwear.htm
Other sites also sell Folkwear patterns, and I have seen this particular one up for bid on eBay.
Also check your local library - if your library doesn't have it, perhaps they participate in interlibrary loans and can order you something at no cost, or for a postage charge.
When I made my kilt for a 36" hip, the repeat in the fabric was 7" and I used just shy of 6 yards. You are looking at a major investment as kilt weight tartans were running at over $18 US three years ago when I was looking for fabric for one for my son.
You may also want to check out some of the sites offering ready made kilts, which may also have patterns.
