mandarin collar

edgy | Posted in General Discussion on

Hi,

I want to add a mandarin collar to a jacket that has only a round neckline. I don’t have anything among my patterns that will work.

Does anyone know if this is just a rectangle? Cut on the lengthwise grain? Asking because I don’t have enough fabric to experiement.

TIA
Nancy

It is usually a thin rectangle with the corners rounded. My suggestion is to experiment with scraps of something else to be sure the neckline shape suits adding this collar and that your collar shape and size are what you want before you cut into the good fabric. This can be basted on and easily removed. This type of collar definitely needs a fairly firm interfacing, so you'll need to experiment with that too. Try to find a fabric with the same "hand" as the fabric you'll use for the final version.

Most mandarins are drafted like the collarband for a shirt -- just

about any pattern drafting text will include this design, or just

steal one from a shirt pattern. Change the length at the center

    back of the pattern piece.
