Need advice and tips!RE:Velvet

I am sewing hand embossed velvet accessories with rayon/acetate velvets. My questions are:
1. Would a professional steamer be worth buying to get the seams flat? I’m using just a steam iron and it takes forever!
2. I’m using a general purpose thread. Should I switch to something different for better seams?
3. I never seem to be able to cut nice straight lines(for scarves). I mark everything and it still seems crooked in places. Would a rotary cutter benefit me with using velvet?
Thank you. I tried getting answers at Jo-Ann fabrics but they seem clueless!

I often have good results tearing velvets. some are too fragile, but most of those I've tried tear nicely. then, if you need a smoother edge, you can cut along the nice straight torn edge.

*Hi Susan, Whenever I sew finicky fabrics I always pull a thread to get a straight grain. If the thread breaks I'll cut up to that point then grab another thread and pull. It's tedious but it's the only way I've found to get a good straight grain.--lin
