Need advice on machine purchase

djwins | Posted in General Sewing Info on

Hi,

I have decided that I want to start a new hobby!  I have always wanted to learn how to sew.  I need your help in purchasing a new sewing machine.  What do you recommend for a beginner?  I want to do alterations and possibly window treatments.

Anyone have any preference over Elna 3007 or Baby lock 1556?

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Donna

There are many discussions on this topic on this sight that you can do a search for. There are many good machines out there made by many different companies. I always reccommend buying from a reliable dealer who will teach you how to use your machine to its capacity and will service it. I would also purchase as much machine as you can afford - one that does more than you think you will use - otherwise you have no room to grow. And I really like computerized machines - even the lower priced ones.

You can read tons online, but you're really going to have to go out there and test-drive some machines and see what appeals to you. It's a lot like buying a car. That said, I've beeen very impressed by the Janome-made Sears machines. You can get a lot of great features for $300-$400.nancy
