My husband and I owned an embroidery business in the U.S. for 20 years before retiring. We always bought Barudan machines. They are a real work horse. You might also look at Tajima brand. These are the two best industrial embroidery machines on the market. Others have plastic parts that wear out. Hope that this helps you.

Normally I shop online (I hate shopping in stores) but I always buy sewing machines (no matter the type) in a store. Several reasons - online can be iffy for getting a new, genuine machine. There are a lot of disreputable sellers out there. Two - you can try the machine before you buy it. Nothing worse than getting a machine home and discovering you don't like how it does x , y,z. Stores often offer free lessons on how to use the machine.
This is one instance where I would caution against a surprise. Take her out and look. You can make notes and research at home before committing.
I have over 25 years experience sewing and I have owned 4-5 regular machines, 3 embroidery machines, and 3 sergers.
