I have a pattern I love but need help making an adjustment to the waistband. Pattern has side-pocket seams. I would like to add some elastic to the waistband (oh my how I have grown). My preference is to add a 2-3 of inches of elastic to each side (behind the pocket area) if possible. I am frustrated with just how to lengthen the waistband and fit it to the pants. Any ideas!
*One way to modify your pattern is to NOT stitch the back darts (and you might want to add a little extra to the back pattern piece at the side seam before you cut your fabric). Also lengthen your waistband pattern piece before you cut the waistband (for example, if you cut it with the CB on the fold, slide it an inch or so away from the fold, to add a couple of inches to the back of the waist). You should end up adding the same amount of length to the waistband as the total of the dart widths that you didn't stitch up (a single dart on either side of CB might equal a couple of inches, but you should measure them), plus whatever you added at the sideseam of the back pattern piece. Match the sideseams with the waistband sideseam markings as you normally would; this will put all the extra fullness in back (of pants pieces and of waistband), where the elastic can draw it up. Hope this helps a little -- it does make pants much more comfortable!
