I am making the bridesmaid’s dresses for my best friend’s wedding in august, and need to find a style that will suit her sister-in-law who will be eight months pregnant at the time. I’m thinking perhaps something with an empire waist and deep box pleats. It would also be nice if the other girl (size 7) and myself (size 14) could wear a similar style…but i know that’s asking a lot. if anyone has any info on how to alter a pattern to accomodate a bun in the oven, I would be ever so grateful. Thanks!

Carrie,
I recently helped my daughter with a wedding that included a 7-months expectant mother as a bridesmaid. the bride chose a low rounded neckline, empire waist, slightly flared skirt style with short cap sleeves. We were fortunate to find a maternity pattern with almost identical styling, made in the same fabric as the others. Suggest waiting to hem this dress until as close to the wedding as possible--as the bun 'rises' so does the hemline--
Hope this helps, Mary E.
*There is an almost identical pattern to the one you describe in Vogue Maternity! It's strapless, with one deep box pleat in the centre front, and I think it comes with a shawl. It's really a sophisticated pattern, and I bet you could easily wear it if you weren't pregnant (it doesn't scream maternity) Good Luck!
