need thread donations

HI, I’m new to the forum. I am recently retired and getting back to an old love – sewing and a wonderful new hobby, machine embroidery. I have a Viking 1+ and enjoy stitching out designs for my  5 grandchildren. I also sew with a group from my church that makes hospital gowns, lap robes, and large coverall bibs for patients at our local Veterans Hospital in Detroit. All of our materials and notions are donated.

At present, we are badly in need of thread of any color and serger thread as well. White, beige, black, grey, brown and navy would be the most useful, but we would be grateful for any donation. Do any of you know of a source for this type of donation. I recently hit the jackpot with a request to the Wright Company for bias tape. They sent me 10 lbs of it!!!! It was like Christmas. I will be watching the forum for any suggestions. Thanks so much. Sue in Michigan

    Hi Sue:

You are probably hoping to find a corporate donor to be as generous as the supplier of the bias tape  :-))

If you check for manufacturers of thread, either on the internet or in a business directory at your local library, you might have the same response.

You may also have some luck with garment manufacturers and fabric mills, oddments, end of the line, miswound and out of date colours.  Because of the manufacturing processes, sometimes the cones are replaced at the beginning of runs when there is a change in colour or fabric.

Also, our local fabric store has a drop off for empty spools and other odd trims and such which we can dip into for schools and projects.  Perhaps your local fabric store, or the Vet's Hospital would be willing to set up a drop off.  If it is there, people will fill it.

    Good luck,  Frances

Hi Frances, thanks so much for your helpful reply. I will check out some of the thread manufacturers as you suggested. I like the idea of a drop box at our local fabric store. I'm sure something will come up. In the meantime, I have some odd colors and old spools we can start with.

        Sue-

Since you are in Michigan... Give Land's End a call - I believe they do some of their own sewing(hemming, monograms), and might have thread that matches last year's clothing...
