I just found out that Needle Arts Studio, a program on PBS, has changed its name, format, and website. It is now called Knitting Daily. The new format is similar to that of Sewing With Martha. Here’s a link to their new website. I like it pretty well.

That show doesn't air in my area, but it's nice to know about, since episodes are viewable from the website, so thanks. I'm not even a knitter - but I'd like to learn! In my area, the PBA affiliates air This Old House, Motor Week, New Yankee Workshop, etc., during pre-prime hours in the evening and after 9 am on Saturdays. But the sewing and gardening shows are on at 6 am! Phooey. Still, I can at least tape the one sewing show and one gardening show that I like. Sorry for the gripe. :>/

Knitting Daily has a web site and a newsletter. You need to "join" but this is w/o cost. The hyper link is in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Please do go forth with your wanting. Knowing the very basics will open up all sorts of creative venues to augment your sewing. Realize of course the learning curve depends on your individual abilty to manipulate the needles.
If you do decide to venture into the doing, i suggest you consider working with circulars, using them as you would straights. Some might find this thought a negative because the connecting cord can be troublesome. Personally, I feel working with the short length of the circ needles is much more manageable for learning.
The following Google URL's have photos of both styles to give you a visual.

When you're ready to take the plunge, this next Google will give you choices. When time permits, open whichever catches your eye. Know also there a CD's you can purchase. Then there are on-line videos you can explore if these work on your PC.

If you start on the knitting road, please post and let us know your progress.

Thank you so much for those additional links. I've sent your message to my email account so I can reference it easily later on. Thank you also for the suggestions. I wouldn't have thought to try the circular needles (though I think the ones Rodezzy is using are pretty enough to want to own, knitter or not). I will let you know how my efforts go.
