new machine for old- need advice

ris | Posted in General Discussion on

Hi, this is my first log on. My 33 yr. singer has gone out of sync again. The needle hits the bobbin housing or whatever is down there. I don’t want to spend 100 bucks on a fix, rather buy a new machine. I would love to fix it myself of course. If I can’t, and I need a new one right away, what do you folks recommend. I am a mender primarily, not into embroidery, but I do the occasional project, curtains, shirts, skirts, costumes and I have a serger.  I want to have a sturdy, inexpensive machine that will take any fabric( I like to work with silks) and wont be a diva like my Singer. It was the top of the line in 69 so it has a lot of features which obviously don’t work at the moment. Any thoughts? ris

Two years ago my husbond bought me a Simplicity celebrity sewing machine for my birthday. We ordered it from sewvacdirect.com. We paid about $160 for it. I love it. I have never had any problems with it and I use it all the time.   Hope this helps.

I'm rather new at sewing except for 4-H many yrs. ago. My husband bought me a New Home HF2022-they are made by the Janome company.  It sews well for me. It doesn't have a lot of fancy stitches, but does what I need to sew and I don't have a serger, though I wish I did. It retails for something like $299, but usually goes on sale for around $229. The employees at Hancock I talked to had either purchased this machine and loved it, or they have another higher level with many more stitches that retails for $499, I think, but usually goes on sale for $399.00, or maybe they just sell it for those prices. I've been sewing on it since last spring, without problems. It does have a one-step button-holer.

    Dear Ris,

I was fortunate enough to be given an "old" Bernina 930 a few years ago. I would guess it was 10 +/- years old at that time, it was my third machine, and I fell in love with it. You can take it from Tricot to Denim with the same needle and never adjust your thread tension. It does have 40 different stitches built in, which I rarely use beyond the basics. One of the great features I love is the basting stitch which will go up to 1/2" long. It also does darning. It just broke down for the first time and I've decided to get an electronic embroidery machine, but I'll never get rid of my workhorse. It will be passed on to a daughter or granddaughter, especially after it's sewen two of their wedding dresses on it.
