New Sewing Machine Advice

shyde | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

I am looking to purchase a new sewing machine and need some input. I have been sewing for 15 years and I am using a very old Singer, at least 35 years old. I will mainly use it for making clothes and quilts, and for heming jeans and misc. items. I have looked at several units and see some things I would like to have. Automatic treader, one-touch button hole, zipper attatchment, thread cutter, retractable feet, ect. I was told that a Brother is a very good unit and also the Viking. I want something that will also sew heavy decorator fabric as well as jean material. I have also heard that I want to make sure it has metal gears, not plastic ones. I am looking to purchase something that will last me 30+ years and would like to keep it around or under $500. Any advice would be helpfull.

    Shannon,

I bought a Brother PC6000 several months ago, after considerable research and shopping.  GREAT MACHINE.  It is loaded with all the features you are wanting, plus many stitch options.  I have recommended it on another forum, and it has been purchased by at least a dozen people since, who rave about it.  You can purchase the machine via the internet from Mr. Sew and Mrs. Vac (I think that is the right name), a business in New York, for $499 with free shipping.  They are an authorized Brother dealer, so warranty issues are no problem.  I just finished a very heavy terrycloth robe, with some seams so thick I thought they would be impossible.  No problem for my Brother.  The machine comes with a lot of presser feet also.  It is very user-friendly as well.

Prior to my Brother, I was exclusively a Singer person.  In my opinion, though, this Brother far surpasses what any Singer could do, and you get a whole lot for your money.  If you want to examine the machine, you can see it on the Brother website, http://www.brothersews.com  I absolutely recommend it.  Let me know what machine you decide on.

    Good luck.
