Hi All:
My name is Sew Demon from Houston, Texas and I love to sew! Started sewing at age 11 and got back into it during my 30’s (I’m in my late 40’s now). I enjoy reading and watching others teach these new sewing techniques. I also own six sewing machines that are all in working order. Currently, I work an 8 to 5 job as a social service caseworker (since 1989) but during my off time I go to thrift stores and estate sales and buy vintage and used clothing and repurpose them into accessories and wearable art to sell online and at arts and craft shows. But don’t get too excited because I’m still working on my website.
I finally went for the first time to the Houston Quilt Festival this past November and it was great. I liked the different vendors and the various vintage fabrics and trims, patterns and notions.
Thanks for your time,
Sew Demon*
*I got the name from an article about a 96 year-old woman in Boston, living in a nursing home, who is still sewing and making a living from it and the author who saw her there said she was “sewing like a demon” on her sewing machine …what an inspiration!

Hi, sewdemon, and welcome from another newcomer to Gatherings. Also from Texas: Fort Worth. Also love to scout sales and thrift stores, but I generally revise the treasures into wearables (rather than accessories) — or curtains. I have some pretty flashy curtains! I've been to Quilt Festival 10 or 12 times and always come away with inspiration.
Hi schmatta:
I have been to Ft. Worth many, many times...have a younger sister who lives in Denton and has been there over 20 years now and an aunt who lives in Garland plus various distant relatives in and around the N. Texas area. You and I need to discuss ideas about what to make out of whatever vintage fabric or used clothing that we find. Sometimes I get stumped for ideas even though I look everywhere and read all the magazines I can get my hands on...thanks for writing.

I think that's a grand idea. Possibly we could meet live and in person. Do we have a pm feature on Gatherings or should I just give you my e-mail address?
Right now I'm looking at a couple of projects in progress that have reached the stage of "What was I thinking?" Unless the fabric is wondrous, I have no trouble tossing such efforts out.
Schmatta,
is your name of Yiddish derivation?
I think it's really spelled shmatte, jjgg, but I adopted this spelling. It means "rag" or "scarf."
Even though my mom's named Golda, we aren't Jewish. My daughter was assimilated into a Jewish family, and I heard her say "Get your shmatte," meaning scarf. I thought that'd be a good name for someone who makes scrap quilts and scavenges bins of kimono waste.
Hi,
What part of Houston are you in? I'm in Clear Lake.
Hi jjgg:
I live in NW Houston -- 290 at West TC Jester.
Ah, a LONG way from me! My son is at UNT in Denton!
Happy sewing
