New Website Features

nikkisewz | Posted in Talk With Us on

Hello all! <!—-><!—-><!—->

As many have you have noticed, we now have a new website with lots of exciting extras. We wanted to introduce you to a few of those features so that you can start sharing and enjoying all the new site has to offer. <!—-><!—->

Our new online Reader’s Closet (which you may remember from the print magazine) is now the place for you all to show off your projects. Simply sign in with your Gatherings user name and password, and you can upload photos and comment on other images in the Reader’s Closet. <!—-> <!—->

You can even share a brief how-to on how you created the items or other views of the same item in the Reader’s Closet. Just follow the instructions to upload your photos to add them to the Reader’s Closet gallery. For each project, you have the ability to upload up to 12 photos, write about your project in a short description, add captions for each photo, and tag with keywords. You can write as much or as little as you like, but keep in mind that we will be looking for great content to feature on the homepage. Check back often to see if you are in the top spot!<!—-><!—->

We have also added a commenting feature to the Web site. Feel free to ask questions and comment on articles and member posts. We always want your feedback and hope that this will be a tool for you to share your thoughts with us and each other. Simply sign in with your Gatherings username and password and comment away.<!—-> <!—->

Hi Nicole! Great to see you here - have been missing the frequent input from Amber, but reading this forum could be a full-time job by itself!

I like the new "Reader's Closet" feature. I hope it's not "going away" in the magazine, though! And ... Would it be possible to add a new category (one of the red bars in the left column) here at Gatherings, to "ping" us when something new has been added? That would make it easier to get the cross-pollination I think you're looking for. (Of course, it would also make it much harder for us to get off the computer and onto the sewing machine LOL)Happy Thanksgiving!Kharmin

      Hi Kharmin,

Thanks so much for the suggestion! I will pass it on.

These will be very nice additions. Thank you. I look forward to seeing more photos, with descriptions and captions, submitted by readers. I agree with KharminJ, though; I like the feature in the magazine, too.I haven't seen the Comments place yet, but I'll find it.The online articles by the Threads editors are also a nice addition. Was there a reference to them in the current issue of the magazine? If so, I missed it, but it's nice to see them listed so prominently on the Threads home page.

    Wow, very interesting.

Went through the closet.  It was interesting.  Any reason it wasn't created as a separate blog from the gatherings site?

    Hi there,

I applaud you - I'm LOVING the new home page with the everchanging reader submissions front and center (in newspapers, called "above the fold!" :). It's a delight to see everyone's work, but it's also refreshing to see something different every few days - it doesn't get stale and keeps me inspired with new, bright, colorful ideas. Kudos!

    Thanks!

    :) Mary

I'm enjoying the new Threads home page more as I've been accustomed to the changes. The postings in the Reader's Closet are great fun.Two requests for restorations of site features: 1. Could the ability to navigate from directly from Gatherings to other Taunton forums be restored? It's now not possible just to click on the words "Over the Fence", "CooksTalk", etc. 2. Can the carry-over of the login from the home-page to Gatherings be restored? It's such a nuisance to have to login twice, which is required to comment on postings on the home page and also in Gatherings.I realize the editorial staff are probably not responsible for these technical problems, but is there someone else to whom these requests could be addressed? Is SYSOP still available in the Sandbox?Edited 12/6/2008 2:55 pm ET by Josefly

      I agree with your suggestions!

Thanks. There are lots of good things about the new pages, but I find those things a real inconvenience. Maybe the kinks will get worked out, though, as the logout button did.

One other addition:  Threads needs to monitor this site more often!

          1. KharminJ | | #11

Or at least let us know that they're really out there, reading it! K

Yes, we are hear reading your thoughts, comments, and suggestions every day! It may not be possible for us to answer you right away with our tight magazine schedule but we are listening and want to make sure you are happy!

Any time-all of the editors here look at the site daily and see what's going on. We haven't forgotten about you!

An acknowledgment, maybe once a week or so, would be nice. We appreciate the opportunity to some input, and most of us love having a forum to ask questions and visit with other sewers.

nikkisewz, can you tell me if there's a place to find out about navigating among the Taunton forums, now that the Threads and Gatherings pages have been reformatted? Formerly, we were able to address questions to SYSOP, in the "Sandbox". However, the link to the Sandbox no longer is shown on the Gatherings Welcome page, though it is still shown on other Taunton forum welcome pages. And when I found my way to the Sandbox from "Over the Fence", my question to SYSOP got no response. So I assume SYSOP is now defunct. The Over the Fence and CooksTalk buttons no longer work as links to those forums from the Gatherings pages. I don't know if that's something specific to my computer or my browser, or the system in general. To whom can I address my questions?edited to add: I've found that if I use a different browser, the Over the Fence and CooksTalk links work. So I guess that means that Safari is incompatible with the newly formatted pages of Gatherings. Still, I'd love to know to whom questions about the Taunton sites can be addressed. And the questions about the Sandbox and SYSOP remain.

Thanks so much for your feedback Josefly.I'll pass your questions on to our tech department. I work in editorial, so I am unsure of how to fix these types of problems.I hope you had a great holiday!

      1. Josefly | | #19

Thanks so much for your answer. Though you are the person who pointed out the new website features to us at Gatherings, I was aware that you are an editor and as such would not be the person to whom these website navigation questions should be addressed. However I haven't found any way to communicate with the technical folks. So I appreciate you forwarding my questions on to the appropriate person, and I look forward to a response.

        Hi nikkisewz,

I'm an infrequent visitor to the Threads website, although that will be changing.  I love Reader's Closet and am interested in submitting photos of my completed projects.  I'm just not seeing how to submit photos and comments to Reader's Closet, and maybe others are equally puzzled.  Where on the website can we find this information?  thanks.  Pattern Nut

Here is a link to some instructions on how to post in the reader's closet. I'm glad you are enjoying the new features on the website. I can't wait to see what you have been working on.https://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/4308/how-to-post-a-project-in-the-readers-closet
