Notch in the Thread Spool

chichm | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

my sewing group and i have a similar problem.  Thread spools used to have a clearly defined notch at the top where the beginning of the thread was tucked in.  Lately, we all are having trouble finding the notch, and the last time it was actually amusing, because the thread was white and so was the spool.  What on earth made the manufacturers change a perfectly good thing?

I've had that problem, too, and blamed it on getting older and not seeing so well. I think what's really going on is that the notch ends under the stick-on label, so the thread end is hidden, and you can't see the notch itself very well. If you run the point of a pin around under the edge of the label, you'll often snag the thread end. Pull it out with the pin, and unwind. And if you're really with it (I'm usually not), you can mark the notch with a sharpie so it's easy to find next time.

This is not such a problem with better threads such as Guterman and Metrosene.  They have the skinny spools - the ends pop right out if you can't find the thread tail.  Plus, they're a better quality - no short staple cotton to fill your machine with lint.

Spools are made of a much softer material now and the notches get smooshed and lose their edges.

On gutterman, the thread end is wrapped in the tiny indentation between the top and the thread. Its hard to see but it is in there. It is great to hook into when you are finished sewing.
