A few weeks ago I asked for suggestions for places to buy good quality fabrics here on the San Francisco Peninsula. There were a number of helpful replies, although most were for online sources, and like most of us, I want to see and feel the fabric first! However, I’ve been on an email list for Denver Fabrics for a while, so I decided to give them a try. I ordered three cotton poplin shirting fabrics, and I am absolutely delighted with the quality and the price. I’ve already finished two of the three shirts I wanted to make, and I loved working with all of the fabrics.
There were the usual problems with ordering colors and prints from a monitor: the yellow was WAY too yellow — so I ran it through a bleach wash and it calmed down nicely. The print was larger than I expected, but that was my bad: they have a tape along the side of the swatch so you can estimate, or they place a dime next to a stripe swatch for the same purpose. But all in all, I am very!! happy with this source so far. It’s not fancy designer stuff, but it’s not the thin ravelley dreck from the local chainstore. At around $4 a yard for a great basic cotton poplin (with bit of spandex, too) shirt, I’m thrilled. I will be using this source again!

I noticed on Facebook that San Francisco stalwart Britex Fabrics has launched an online notions department:
