I am looking at a Janome Decor Excel 5018 for my 17 year old daughter. She sews a lot and designs her own patterns and clothes. It is also a serger and she is interested in having that feature. She doesn’t have much patience for manuals so I think she needs a machine that you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out how to use it. In the small town in Canada where I live, this machine is $600 (originally $900 but is last year’s model). Does anyone know if this is a good bet??

Val, just to be sure you're not confused--that machine isn't also a serger, although I believe it does have an overlock-type stitch that will be fine for finishing seams. But even without being a serger, it looks to me like a good choice for someone who does garment (or home dec, for that matter) sewing and doesn't require lots of decorative stitches, or digitized embroidery. I'm not familiar with the pricing of that model, so I can't say if you're getting a good deal or not...

I have the a New Home MC5000, but I use my Janome 5124 for all of my sewing. It's pretty much like the 5018 with maybe a few more stitches. I've had it for 3 years with no problems.
