I’ve been searching for ways to cover and pad a straight wooden hanger to give as a gift along with an article of clothing. It would transform a simple, ordinary gift into a special one. Any ideas?

When in doubt, ask Martha.

i remember seeing something about that in a book about couture sewing by Roberta Carr published by Palmer/Pletch - just went and looked it up - you need 2 peices of batting approx 9" x 14" wrapped around each half of the hanger - and here is the trick to it - cut off the foot of an old pair of nylons and use this to cover the batting. Each half of the hanger is covered seperately with the top peice (a rectangle measuring 3 1/2" x 21 1/2" with one end rounded off) gathered onto the lower peice ( a rectangle 3 1/2" x 10 1/4" rounded off on one end)
after the top an bottom peices have been sewn together and slid over the nylon, a bias tube is slid over the hook and then the two sides are whip stitched together. She then loops some ribbon around the hook and over the stitching and ties a bow. She also recommends a little potpourri (I'd suggest lavender) be sprinkled into the covers before inserting the hanger.
Hope this helps Pamela
Ready made padded hangers cost less than wooden ones. Consider slipcovering them, saves a lot of work and materials.
