I made a cutting error on my latest pair of pants and did not adjust for hip size on the Burda pattern with the result that my jeans fit perfectly in the leg but from the hip to waist I need about another two inches! The only thought I’ve had is to try and add to the seam allowances in the zipper area in the centre back. It sounds like it would be a bit messy and obviously I’d have to wear only long tops.
Has anyone else found a way around this problem? Thank you.

I agree, I think that would be messy also and I'm not sure you would like the fit. Why not add a strip of fabric (plain or embroidered) or ribbon (interfaced if needed) to each side seam. Since you say they are perfect from the hip down, you could taper the legs so they are a little narrower before stitching the strip. This would probably result in a better fit then adding to the zipper area. Stripes down the side of the leg are in again. This could be something you could play with and have fun.
Good Luck.
Thanks Sue that's a terrific idea and a fashionable solution. YOu're right, the fit wouldn't be attractive the other way.
Good luck, how about posting a pic after your done. Bet they come out looking cute.

I don't have a scanner unfortunately, but I promise to be truthful about how they look! Since they are a softish denim I'm considering an insert of the same fabric and with a contrasting topstitching thread in red, running a couple of rows of decorative stitching down the insert/leg seams. Am quite looking forward to this.
what a terrific spot for some nifty machine embroidery!
That's the spirit. Sounds like you will have more fun sewing them then you anticipated. Sometimes ooops can lead to go things.
dear nbutler6, How are the jeans doing? Did you put the strip in? and embroider it? How do they look? rjf
Hi rif - You may have seen the other thread I put in about "pants that grow"... well here is the latest silly thing to happen: a couple of days ago I forced my way into the jeans and wore them around the house pulling on the seam allowances where the zipper would go to "encourage" the hip area to stretch. Well after 2 days of this I have been able to insert the zipper and close the pants , and will continue to try and wear them and see if the "give" continues enough for the pants to be comfortable; and it looks like that may well happen. If not then I'll open them up and do the inserts. I've already bought the topstitching thread so I'll be ready if it's needed. Really this is the oddest thing isn't it.
Problem is when you wash them, they'll go back to the original size and you'll have to "wear" them all over again.
oh will this ever end? Maybe I should just wear skirts - it never happens with
skirts. Of course I use wool or linen- will let you know further on the pants saga!
