pants to cover a cast?

nmog | Posted in General Discussion on

Our wonderful one year old son has broken his leg. He was trying to walk and turned on it as he fell. He now has an ankle to knee cast. It’s fine if he’s wearing shorts, but all of his jeans are too narrow. Do I make palazzo jeans for him? He’ll be the talk of his baby group! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

How about what my family calls zoo pants. Basic cotton material that you make a very loose fitting pants from and make the legs a bit wider to get the cast into.  You could also add a snap crotch to make getting them on easier.  Or with out sewing get him some large tube socks that you can put over the cast and the non cast leg when he is wearing shorts if it gets that cool that he needs the extra warmth.

Those are very good ideas! I hadn't thought of cotton, since he is able to wear through jean knees in one wearing - he likes crawling on our driveway. However, with the cast I can't see him moving that much, and I've got some cute cotton stuff waiting for a purpose. Thanks!

    Dear NMO

Have you tried opening the seam on the pant leg and inserting Velcro?  Perhaps even an elastic gusset to give the extra ease needed?

    Cheers

Louise - and good luck with the little one's recovery!

I'm so glad there is this forum!!!! Velcro would make his life easier, and I could take it out later and not need to sew a second pair for when he's back to 'normal' (whatever that is).

In my previous life I taught Junior High. I always wanted to make ####suit out of velcro and have the shop teacher make a wall covered in velcro, so that when the students were challenging I could take a few of them, put them in the suits and let them hang around for a while. Maybe I could do that in my basement now that I'm a mom....

      Thank you for the ideas!

        Dear NMO

Hmmmmmmmm the velcro suit for miscreants sounds like a good idea however, you may find that as a mom it might be better if YOU wore the suit and then hung yourself high for a bit of peace and quiet!  You just have to figure out how not to have "Velcro-hair" when you come down again!

Good luck with the pants and the little one!
