Pattern drafting for plus-size women

audweid | Posted in Patterns on

Hi all you avid sewers.

I’m hoping that someone out there can direct me to some pattern drafting books on how to draft for extra-large women.  I would really like to start my patterns from scratch using slopers.

Thanks in advance.

Try "Sewing for Plus Sizes" by Barbara Deckert. Very useable, very readable. Great drawings and photography on very real very plus size people.

    Hello!

"Sewing for Plus Sizes" by Barbara Deckert won't teach you how to draft patterns from scratch. You will learn to "size up" commercial patterns to your size and to adjust them to your figure variations instead. You can take a look at the table of contents at http://www.taunton.com/store/pages/070395_tcpg.asp. Although I am not plus-size, I think it's really a good book.

If you really want to draft patterns, try Kenneth Kings CD on making a moulage. I really liked the pants drafting cd.

        Hello Nancy,

Thanks for your post, although I am not sure you addressed it to the right person - this thread was started by audweid and not by me. Regarding Kenneth King's CDs "The Moulage" and "Trouser Draft", I have ordered them and I know I'll get them today.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU LIKE THE MOULAGE. I HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO IT YET. I AM PLANNING TO MAKE A COVER FOR MY DUCT TAPE MANNIKAN(SIC) AS KK SUGGESTS.

Gerry Cooklin has written a book aimed at the fashion industry about designing and cutting for plus sizes. It uses standardized measurement charts based on anthropomorphic research, rather than personalised measurements, but the information is excellent. His books are published by BSP Professional Books a division of Blackwell Scientific Publications Ltd. They have a website, but I can't find my link to it. Sorry!

Thank you very much for that information.  I'll look into it.

Hi, On a recent visit to London I visited R.D.Franks Bookshop. They sell every and almost all publications on Fashion and the Business of Fashion. I inquired about the Gerry Cooklin book and they said there are plans to reprint this book but they could not say when. This was in the Spring of this year.
In the meantime, I would suggest you keep looking, Ebay.uk could be a great source.
