Patterns available to download

Sunshine | Posted in Patterns on

One of the things I love about this sewing board is that there are people from all around the world who contribute their ideas and knowledge.  A comment I’ve seen several times is how expensive and time-consuming it is to buy patterns in countries outside the USA. Perhaps this suggestion will help me to repay my debt to all who contribute their expert advice on so many topics!

Today, in my very frequent emails from Joann’s, I saw a link to “Downloadable Patterns”. Being the curious type, I clicked and looked.  They are now having some patterns available from the Big 4 and other specialty pattern companies that can be downloaded over the Internet to your PC (but not to Mac’s).  They are still in the $12-16 range, but perhaps the ubiquitous Joann’s coupons could help with the price. (Today I got a 50% off online-only coupon good until Aug 8th) When checking out the patterns, click on style categories (ie skirts, mens, crafts, etc) instead of brand names to see the various patterns available.  Some had the regular pattern numbers, but most did not.  The downloads are supposed to happen within 24 hours.

I haven’t tried this, so I don’t know how well it will work. From some other websites that download patterns, I’m guessing that you will get multiple sheets of paper to tape together to make up the full pattern pieces. You do have to specify the size range, and then multi-sizes are downloaded, the same format as regular tissue patterns.

So, for all our sewing friends who have limited access to patterns, I hope this helps. I’d love to see some comments from anyone who tries out this method. How well did it work for you, were the pieces easy to work with, what problems were experienced, how were the download directions, etc???

Good luck!

Burda patterns also has some free pattern downloads. If you are English-speaking you need to click English on the top left to make sure that everything is in English. Some of the folks at Pattern Review have downloaded patterns, taped them together and used them successfully. HTH

I have downloaded the free patterns from Printsew.com which I wrote about here a long time ago. These 70 or so printed pages, depending on pattern choice,  are still in a folder waiting for me to layout and trace out.

How do I print the patterns on the Free Patterns page?  I only see it being able to save as a favorite but I don't see anywhere where it says to print. Thanks!

          Hi Cycler,

Ok, things have changed since my last login to the site.

I clicked the Hot Patterns Shirt Pattern, clicked down arrow to get all sizes, clicked add to favourites. That's it. I got no further. Even though it said "added successfully". I must be missing something, like you I don't see any Print or Download Instructions.

After logging in to printsew, I was able to download the Free 'Simplicity 4116'. Which I can access in "My Patterns" folder at the top of printsew screen.

I think there should be "my favourites" folder there too, but isn't.

I have sent their support people an email asking what is happening.

Yes, I wrote to them too but I thought that you might know something since you had been there before.

That's the pattern that I want, too!

Thank you for making me aware of the change. I hope we hear something soon.

After a few emails working out this situation, today I received an update.... Apparently the Hot Patterns Shirt is no longer available.

I wish webmasters would update their sites.

I've also been in contact there and they never got back to me to tell me that - thanks for letting me know!

So annoying!  I really liked that pattern!
