pincushions

Ariana | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

I am looking for different ways to make them; stand alone as well as for the wrist. Especially interested in stuffing options. Any information will be appreciated.

I don't know where I saw this, possibly in Threads, but there is a type of stand-up pincushion made by rolling perhaps 2 1/2 inch wide strips of different color wools until you have a spool shape as big as you want it.  The wool lubricates the pins, of course.  This item has a rustic or at least historical look, kind of like a pouncer.  It is self-stuffing and will stand up by itself.  God Bless You, Galey

My sister made me a pin cushion many, many years ago using a tuna fish can.  The lid is left attached and bent up.  It is then filled with fine grade steel wool and covered with quilted fabric with lace around the edges of the can lid and the "seat" of the can.  Looks like a chair without legs.  I really like it for several reasons,  when it gets knocked off the table it doesn't break.  I use the back of the chair for hand sewing needles so I always have pins and needles in the same place when I need them. It is light weight, sits flat.  Since then I have made one useing a big tuna can as I needed more surface for pins and it works great.  On the big one I stuffed the bottom with left over batting and put the steel wool on top, which sharpens my pins.

Sounds like just what I am looking for. I like your idea of two different sizes. The small one I can use for silk pins, and the large one for woven, and maybe even another small one for ballpoint pins for knits. Many possibilities. Thank you very much for your idea.
