Platter purses are described in Shirley Adams' booklet "The Sewing Connection 8". Using a platter is an easy way to cut an oval shape for the purse. She gives complete directions for making them (you won't need a pattern) and some other wonderful ideas as well. Her web site is http://www.sewingconnection.com. Our PBS station used to carry her TV sewing show and it was like a complete class each time. I really miss it.
