pleated pouch purse

cavish | Posted in General Discussion on

I’m trying to make the pleated pouch purse that was featured in a back issue of Threads and is currently in CraftStylish. I am trying to figure out how big of a pleat to make so that the “waistband” fits the purse. I cut everything according to the directions but there were no measurements for the pleats…math is not my strong point. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Especially on a purse, pleating doesn't have to be precise; in fact, it might look better with some bigger pleats in the middle and smaller ones at either side, or even randomly spaced and sized pleats. One way to figure it out is to pleat the cut-out sections with your fingers and hold the pleats together with pins or clips, readjusting until they meet the band length. Another way is to cut the band and the purse section out of paper toweling, pleat it and tape or pin, then mark each outside fold with a bold line and each inside fold with a dotted line. Then you can transfer the markings to the fabric pieces and fold away with confidence. The math for pleats is not too complicated, but I've always gotten better results with this hands-on method.

thanks so much, this one is going to be this year's Derby purse, and it's the first time trying to follow a pattern. I usually do better on my own, so your advice is great.
