I have a card table I want to convert into a table that I can use for a formal dinner for four. I bought fabric that I want to pleat to have a pleated skirt all around. I thought I’d have a piece of fabric covering the top to which I attach the pleated skirt. (Then I can lift the whole thing off.) On top of all that, I’ll place a tablecloth and napkins.
The Problem: How do I attach the pleated skirt to the top without having an unsightly bump? The only thing I can think of doing is attaching the pleated skirt to a band (like a narrow waist band) and then attaching that band to the top fabric piece. Is there a better way?
Thx.

Enid,
If you make the "top" slightly larger than the actual tabletop then the seam won't fall on the edges of the table but instead be a little lower. Another idea is to put strong velcro around the tabletop and on the pleated skirt, you can then just velcro the skirt to the table. I've seen caterers that have plastic clips that fit around the table edges; they attach velcro to these instead of putting it on the actual table (if this is an issue for you).
Another option would be to try a serged seam instead of a "traditional" one to see if it cuts down on bulk. I'd try both on scraps first and then manipulate them around the table to see what might work for you.
Good luck with your project!

I think I'll try the slightly larger approach, it seems the simplest. Thx.
