Hi. My mother-in-law wants me to make her a dress with a portrait collar. My first question is what exactly does a portrait collar look like? I have an idea, but not clear enough to figure out how to draft a pattern. Which leads to my next question, how would I go about drafting a pattern for one? I have looked at vintage patterns, but can’t seem to find exactly what she is looking for. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can't seem to find a picture, either. Here's what i thought a portrait collar was: a very, very large collar that sometimes extends almost to the top of the sleeve, round in back but notched, with lapels in a V neck front. Maybe someone else can find a picture.
Here are two pictures that I found:

And here is a definition from this website ( http://www.talbotsinc.com/press/fashion/glossary.asp) : Portrait collar
Large collar that is squared off in the front and back and extends as far as the shoulder seams.

The first picture looks very much like the collar of Vogue 8538 that i have. The pattern is probably 29 years old. (I'm guessing.) When I looked at the Vogue site I found a totally different garment with that number. I said it was round in back. That wasn't a good description...I was just trying to distinguish it from a sailor collar.
Thanks so much. The pictures are helpful.
