I am currently shopping for a new sewing machine. I was wondering if sewing machine shopping is like car or large appliance shopping where you are expected to negotiate a little…..? Can one ask for some little extras to be thrown in? Is it possible to get different prices from different stores, the way car dealerships operate? Thanks for any info!

You bet! The dealer pays wholesale price, there is a suggested retail but it's up to the dealer how much they want to sell for. You should be able to expect a better deal if you buy 2 machines at once or buy some extras and get them to throw in a few more. Don't expect much bargaining on lower end machines as the dealer doesn't have much to deal with but you should be able to with higher end machines (unless they already have an awesome deal going). Do some comparison shopping first so you have something to work with.
Wow. Thank you Thimblefingers. This is very good to know!

Yes, many places work on commission and have quotas to meet.
,,,which is exactly why i am too embarrassed to negotiate. they gota make a living, right? not criticising, in fact i wish i had the guts to negotiate sometimes. i just can't
