problem with dress

slc1479 | Posted in Feedback on Threads on

I recently made a dress from New Look pattern 6968/dress A. I’m happy with the way it looks but when I wear it, it tends to ride up in the front……the neckline rises up as well as the waist. Does anyone have any idea why it would be doing this?

Most likely this is happening because there isn't enough fabric in the back.  You may have "forward shoulders", a "curved back" or some other feature that the pattern does not address without alterations.  Get some fitting books from your local library.

That is a pretty pattern BTW and would be great as a muslin to define fitting issues.

I have fairly normal shoulders as far as I know......never had this kind of a problem. I think it's something to do with the pattern, but I don't know what. I've made a few other dresses from New Look and other pattern companies and never had this to happen. I've also made other fitted dresses like this one and didn't have the problem.

Is there anything I can do now that the dress is already made? It's much too cute to not wear. It's not a significant shift backwards, but it does move in that direction. I found myself pulling it down several times while I was wearing it.

      Thank-you

It could very easily be the pattern.  The back may be too short for you, hence not enough fabric in the back.  The dress is trying to compensate for that by pulling fabric from the front.   If you have a pattern that you like the way it fits, compare it to this New Look.  You probably cannot fix this dress.  Did you measure the pattern before you cut it?

I measured some but obviously not enough. I need to get into the habit of measuring all patterns. Like I said before, I haven't had this type of problem ever.......other problems yes, but not this one.

Are you wearing a slip wth the dress - somethig it can slide over?

I only had a half slip when I wore it but, I'll try a whole slip......good idea.
