Just wanted to share an easy, economical tip for getting privacy without sacrificing light: use white tablecloth plastic.
After losing a trellised vine that screened our large master bathroom window, I tried a spring-loaded rod and various fabrics to provide privacy. However, even with miniblinds and doubled fabric, it was very easy to see anyone inside at night, and the thicker fabrics blocked a lot of natural daylight.
Desperate, I cut off a doubled length of plastic sheeting from one of those disposable party rolls and draped it over the rod between the miniblinds and the glass. (Tonight, I’ll stitch a proper casing and hem.) It’s completely opaque but allows nearly the same amount of light into the room, it was cheap (recycled and free), and can definitely handle moisture and cleaning.
I will be careful to allow air space to prevent mildew, but for the short-term, it’s an easy and quick solution.
