Has anyone ever re designed a man’s skirt? I love to buy skirts in thrift stores because the quality is so high, but I would like to feminine them a bit. Any suggestions: books, experience. Thanks.

Do you perhaps mean a man's sHirt???
Men don't wear skirts in this country... as a general rule. And it's pretty unlikely that you would find a man's sKirt in a Thrift store.
Are you looking to "soften" the look of the shirt? You could do that in several ways:
- add lace
- change the buttons to pearl buttons
- dye the shirt
- add embellishments
Couple books to consider:
- Fine Machine Sewing by Carol Ahles (???)
- Fine Embellishment Techniques by Nancy Zeiman
Those will get you started. Hope this helps. If not, hope it helps someone. :-))
*Before I even think about embellishment, I have to do a few major re-fits on men's shirts... Shorten the bottom and the sleeves... Then I usually add the thinnest of covered blouse shoulder pads and add darts or tucks, front and back. I upgrade the buttons if the originals were plastic, to pearl or metal or another interesting type of button.By the way, a much cheaper place to "purchase" than thrift shops: your husband/boyfriend/friend/dad/brother's closet. For some reason, some men keep shirts they have long since outgrown. It almost seems like you are doing them a favour when you "liberate" their old shirts.
