I have some metallic-finish shank buttons that match my dress fabric perfectly, but the package says they are hand-washable. I really don’t want to hand wash the dress every time I wear it, so I would like to create a removeable strip of three buttons for the center front of the dress at the neckline. Any suggestions as to how to do this?

Depending on the thickness of the fabric a small strip could be attached with snaps, but I would probably do buttonholes on both sides of strip at the front, and put a small flat button on the back of the shank button (kind of like cufflinks or a little dumbell) so you could just remove the button entirely. The buttonholes on the bottom layer will need to match the small flat button of course, and the top layer match the nice buttons you are protecting.
There are, well at least there used to be, small safety pins designed for attaching buttons to a garment. When laundering the garment, the pins/buttons were simple to remove. I have used them on suit jackets and they worked great. Unfortunately I don't recall where I got them. Good luck!
This removable button is now in trend and also gives unique look to your dress. The cv people reviews the tools and supplies and they think it is cool to use these accessories. I am sure you will love these ideas and patterns.
Wawak sewing supply has button pins. very prompt mail service.
I have a card of removable buttons, and they do in fact have a cotter pin with a curved section to accept the shank loop on the back of the buttons. Looking at the cotter pins, they work with all the looped back buttons I have, so I'm guessing the buttons do not have to be purchased with the pins. In other words, you can use the silver Highland buttons as removable ones if they have the loop.
