Replacing sliders on #5 mylar zippers

sewnutt | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

I have always had great success in purchasing longer separating zippers to keep in stock and shortening them from the top.    Often I have been able to simply install a new slider on a zipper to avoid the time and customer expense of zipper replacement.    However, YKK has redesigned the sliders on their mylar (plastic tooth type) zipper in such a way that changing the slider is not possible for me.

Has anyone had experience with this and had success???       It is my understanding that the older style sliders are no longer sold for replacements.

My only successes with zipper repair have been when the damaged coil or tooth is close to the bottom. I have simply re-fed the slide onto the zipper so that it is above the damage and moved the stop or hand stitched a new stop. IMO it is best to just replace the zipper, since one damaged section usually precedes more as the zipper is wearing out. The better made your garment is the harder it is to wrestle the zipper out and reconstruct the seam.
