Reversible skirt

sewnel | Posted in General Discussion on

I’m interested in making a reversible skirt like I’ve seen at Colwater Creek Stores.  They’re made with light, drapey fabric like georgett and have an elastic waistband.  Can anyone tell me how to make the waistband look good on both sides?  Thanks!

My recommendation would be to cut both skirts with an allowance for a waist band added on. To avoid having to insert a zip, remember to make the waist large enough to slip over your hips. Make both 'skirts' then join the two layers at the outer edge of the 'waist band', right sides together. Turn layers so the wrong sides are together, and machine a 1.5" wide casing for the elastic, leaving a small opening to insert the elastic. Georgette being a light weight fabric, the casing will not be bulky.I would allow the garment to hang for at least a day or two before finishing because Georgette is loosely woven and may 'drop'. Check the layers to ensure they are level, and finish with rolled hems.If you have fabric over you could make a reversible sash for a stylish look if you want to wear a tucked-in top.

Thanks!!  Why didn't I think of that?
