Hi, can someone tell me how to measure the amount of fabric to make a ruffle for the hem of a dance dress? The ruffle/flounce is 9 incles wide. Thank you!

Depends on the measurment of what you are sewing the ruffles to. i cut ruffles across the fabric from selvage to selvage and figure on at least a 2:1 ratio. For example, if your skirt hem measures 200", divide that by 45" (or the width of the ruffle fabric) = 4.44; round up to the next whole number = 5 and multiply by 2 = 10 ruffle pieces. Your ruffles are 9" (finished? or cut?), add seam and hem allowances = 10"; 10" x 10 ruffle pieces = 100"; divide by 36 and you need 3 yards of 45" wide fabric for ruffles. There will be 8" left over that is allowed to straighten the first edge.

Hi Chris, thank you for responding to my question. I understand what to do now.
1/3rd times extra to make ruffles
I usually start with a calculation of 1/3rd more than the main piece. i.e. if the piece is 3 feet hem edge, then I add an extra 1 foot for the ruffles. So the main hem would be 3 feet and the piece to ruffle would be 4 feet. I am happy with this method but Have to take into account what type of fabric it is. The wrong fabric might make the garment look short with bushy ruffles or it might look saggy with heavy ruffles.
