try the secret workshop, they carry novelty fabric http://www.secretworkshop.com. Also, if you are in Canada, Crafts Canada stores carry novelty fabrics.
*Dottie, if you don't find a suitable tire fabric, you might try making your own. You could prewash and dry a plain fabric in the color you want, pin or tape it to cardboard or another large flat surface, and then print a tire design, using textile paints. You might find a tire rubber stamp that would work, but a tire is basically just a doughnut shape. You could cut it out of foamcore or another stiff sheet foam, and glue something on the back for a handle (like an empty thread spool). Print the tires in black or charcoal, and then use metallic silver to print the centers. Maybe draw a few little herringbone lines on each tire to suggest the tread texture, using white or lighter grey. The wheels could be in piles, or singly. Toss in some triangles or other shapes between tires, in another color, to make it interesting. You could add some parentheses-shaped lines to create motion, like the tires are rolling! This is fun! Let's make a tire fabric! To make the paint permanent, you just have to let it dry, and then iron it on the wrong side to set it, following the directions on the paint jar.
*Good Idea!! How about printing just the tread tracks?
*That would be great. Or just an occasional tire running crazy, with all the tread tracks that it has left behind....
*Hi, I need help! I need to know what sorts of fabrics would be suitable to make a ball type gown. The fabrics can't be too heavy, expensive and must be durable. I need this fabric for a school textiles project. I am making a dress that can be worn in the ballroom scenes of a fairytale play. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!
*Bengalene might be good for your project. It is a cotton/rayon faille weave, can be plain or moire. Price ranges from $9-13/yd. 48"-54" wide. Handles easily, come in a super range of color, heavy enough to look like a "ball gown" without a lot of interlining or backing, looks good on stage.
*Jo, since it is for a play, you might consider using a drapery or home dec fabric. You get a lot of texture and "beef" for the money. I've done theatrical costuming in the past, and we almost always hit the home dec dept. of the store first. In fact, I did a "Cinderella" gown from a great old gold drapery brocade trimmed in rayon drapery cord.
*I notice that we have this same discussion going in two different locations....
*anyone know where i can get lightweight waterproof canvas or real leather look waterproof fabric, something like naugahyde. marsha
*Marsha, I think you'll get a better response to your questions if you ask them as a separate discussion, with a title, so people will see them. To do that, you click on "Add a discussion" at the top, and it gives you a place to write the title and ask your question. I may try to move them for you--
