Does anyone do this regularly? maybe as a business? I ‘m looking for your favorite methods of attaching a stiff backed sequin applique onto a cotton lycra skating outfit. I know I need to pin them in place WHILE on the body, but what do you recommend for sewing in place? In addition to the stiff backing, each motif is outlined in small seed beads. I was thinking by hand or machine zig-zag and wonder how to compensate with either method for the stiff/stretchy combination. Thanks for any help!

How about sandwiching the costume between the applique and a piece of paper? Maybe if the cotton-lycra doesn't come into contact with the feed-dog, it won't be pulled out of shape. Then tear away the paper when it's in place. It should work for hand-sewing as well. rjf
I had to do this for a ballet costume years ago...I attached pin backs to the applique (you can find them with jewelry findings) and pinned the applique to the leotard. Then I hand-sewed around the perimeter of the applique. This costume was only needed for a 3-show run, so afterwards I removed the applique and washed the leotard (and never got around to putting the applique back on!). I like the security of having it pinned because if you're jumping around or something the weight of the applique (mine's heavy) can tear out hand-stitching.
I can take a picture of what I'm talking about with the pin backs when I go home this weekend, if you need.
