I have a Bernette 234 and all of a sudden I’m having a problem with the thread of the second needle hanging up and breaking. I’ve twiddled with the tension until I’m blue in the face and cannot seem to come up with a cure. Does anyone have a clue as to what is going wrong here?

Have you checked to see if the needle is pushed all the way in/or with the flat side back? Thoroughly clean your machine and rethread it all again and use two brand new needles. Sometimes it isn't so much the tension as the needle. Good luck.
*Thanks, Darlene, did all that you advised but still having problems. Guess I'm going to have to upgrade. :-)
*Jean, Check to see that your thread isn't getting hung up on the spool itself. If you're using regular thread, make sure the side with the slit is at the bottom. Also try using a spool cap. Sue gb suggested running a stocking over each thread guide, to see if there's a burr which the thread might be catching on.Course if you'd rather upgrade... Nancy
*I had a similar problem and it was determined I had a burr on one of the loopers. Once it was corrected it resolved the problem. You have to have your serger serviced by your local service provided in order to correct. Good luck.
*Thanks for all the helpful advice. I think that the burr on the looper is what is causing the problem so I'll bring it in to the dealer. I am leaning toward the upgrade if it isn't too out of line price-wise.
