Serger Question

Hello All!

I have a question about sergers. I’m seriously considering getting a serger sometime soon, I mentioned to my husbant that it would be a good holiday gift. I don’t want to spend a whole huge amopunt of money though. I have a Babylock machine that I love, and I would like to get some feedback on the Babylock sergers. Particularly the Protege. I know it’s a discontinued model, but I can get a good deal on one. What I would like to know is if anyone has one, how do you like it, and is there any trouble getting accessories for it since it is a retired product? I only sew for myself, and some household stuff, occasionally I do costume work around Mardi Gras and Halloween, but that’s about it. I’m not a heavy duty sewer, so I don’t think I really need one of the $1500 sergers, although it’s nice to dream!

Thanks for your input!

Lynn

Lynn, I bought a Bernina 800 earlier this year and have just loved having it. I didn't need the coverstitch or any of the fancier gizmos, and even though I'm just learning more and more about my serger, I find it does everything I need it to marvelously. The big bucks go toward automatic self-threading, and I have learned how to thread mine from scratch without much hassle. It helps to have one of those long needle threaders (like Nancy's Notions carries) --- with that it is a piece of cake. Don't buy a discontinued model. Get something basic and current and learn how to use it. I bought mine for $599 and they are that price right now for the Christmas promotion. You'll love having one!
